What has sustained me during the month of no-shave November 2024?: publishing books by authors whose time has come to be seen and whose stories and expertise must be heard.
Despite the chaos and darkness that will be coming out of Washington in the next four years, I’m choosing to focus more than ever on the things that give life and hope. We’ve watched less news in our house, read more books, and tried to make decisions to live more authentically, even if they are hard decisions.
Pictured here is me working on a memoir full of amazing storytelling and insight from an author whose story indeed needs to be told, and readers will indeed find her words and observations healing, eye-opening, and love generating. Just stay tuned to this newsletter and you’ll see it and others like it coming from Lake Drive.
That’s what’s keeping me grounded and moving forward daily in this time. How about you? I hope for the same.
Lake Drive News
Take a look at counselor Kate Meyer’s “Coping with Grief through Three Phases Instead of Five Stages” over on the Lake Drive blog. As someone with a background in psychology who has studied grief, I have always found the five stages a bit too clinical and hard to follow for the average person. For anyone who has experienced almost any kind of loss, and for those who want to know more about how loss works, this is a great summary of Meyer’s simple guidance on grief in her book Faith Doesn’t Erase Grief.
We previously mentioned the For Our Daughters 30-minute documentary by Kristin Kobes Du Mez but still want to encourage you to not miss this chance to better understand the experience of clergy abuse survivors like Christa Brown, which she talks about in her book Baptistland.
We offered a handful of Audible audiobook codes to addiction recovery expert Caroline Beidler’s You Are Not Your Trauma: Uproot Unhealthy Patterns, Heal the Family Tree. We still have codes left and would love to share them with you if you simply reply to this email saying so.
Finally, Andrea Fleck-Nisbet, CEO of the Independent Book Publishers Association, recently said this:
"According to Nielsen BookScan, of the approximately 635 million print books sold and reported in 2024, a full third were produced by independent publishers . . . In other words, independent publishing drives our industry more than it’s acknowledged."
What we offer at Lake Drive is a grassroots alternative to the top-heavy publishing industry, and we bring you books that aren’t on the shelves of the big box retailers or on the news cycle and celebrity-driven bestseller lists. To that end, know that we would always love your recommendation of a good author to consider. Networking and community: that’s how a lot of things work best in this world and that’s where we are at Lake Drive.
Grateful for you,
David Morris, Publisher
