I still can’t get over the moment in The Tiger in the Lifeboat when Lauren Cibene is alone in a bathroom in India, sweating, anxious, and helplessly tangled in a sari—until a local woman steps in with a quiet, wordless kindness. “She didn’t laugh, didn’t scold, didn’t ask questions. She just reached for the fabric and began wrapping it around me like it was the most natural thing in the world.” That beautiful act of compassion hit me hard. It reminded me how healing often begins in the humbling moments—when someone shows up for you without needing to understand your whole story.
It’s a small moment, in a faraway land and a different culture, that showed Lauren how compassion for someone different from you works, an act that perhaps she hadn't seen much of in her own culture, after her own recent betrayal, during her own deconstruction.
This moment is beautifully and professionally read by the audiobook’s narrator, Stephanie Breese. It’s one of many listening moments that will sweep you away to a story about learning to trust yourself.

We’re nearing the end of Pride Month 2025, but it’s still a good time to go read author Brandon Flanery’s Lake Drive Books blog post, “What It Feels Like to Be Gay in the Evangelical Church,” which is a good sampling of his book Stumbling: A Sassy Memoir about Coming Out of Evangelicalism.
