I appreciate this. At the same time, I wish theists would refrain from throwing “child of god” language at atheists. It would be nice to have truly equal respect with people who believe in non-demonstrable and unfalsifiable metaphysical entities.

What the author describes here is undoubtedly progress. And it does take bravery to admit the real reason you believe in god is because you want to. I hope this progress leads to a deeper reckoning with the Christian privilege that pervades our society. It’s that privilege that’s at the root of all the assumptions about atheists she had to question due to her brother’s revelation and the cognitive dissonance that caused. That atheists often feel the need to “come out,” with trepidation, shows how very unequal we are.
